Nice location, shame about the dog poo! The GOBA mooring at Hemingford is popular both with boaters and dog walkers. It's a shame they don't clean up after their pets.
Looks like Cassie's had an argument with Ouzel! Judes Ferry is a most acceptable spot for a pint. It has a good reputation for food, although we haven't tried it yet.
Lorna posing again!
There's always variety of wildlife to be seen on this section of the Old West River.
Marina down in the galley.
Tied up to the mooring barge at Brownshill Staunch, which up until it was upgraded for the IWA festival, was the slowest lock in all Christendom!
A traditional Fenland cruiser moored up at the delightful village of Hemingford Grey.
Heading up the Lark towards Judes Ferry.
Evening on the Old West River.
The manned Hermitage Lock at Earith has recently been refurbished, including a new shower block and control room.
Much fouling of the prop occurred whilst following these weedcutters! A good blast astern is all that's needed to clear any weed picked up.
Winding our way up Wicken Lode. There's just enough room for two boats to pass, we know, we've done it! The National Trust-owned Wicken Fen is one of the oldest nature reserves in Britain and well worth a visit, whether by boat or road. A very pleasant night was spent in this beautiful place.
This vintage Field Marshall tractor was spotted outside the Ferry Boat Inn at Holywell. We'll stick to the vintage boat!
Beyond the lock lies the River Cam. There's only one ladder in this lock and not much in the way of mooring bollards which makes using it rather interesting! To the right you can see the automatic grab which clears the weir of weed. The lock mechanism automatically resets after 15 minutes which can make passage rather slow. The area around this lock is immaculately kept and very boater-friendly.
We passed this gorgeous Dutch barge of the Old West river. It's rather unusual with the open cockpit.
Tied up on the public section of hte Environment Agency mooring at Upware on Reach Lode. The views from this waterway are really good, as the lode is a long way above the surrounding fens. Unlike most of the waterways on the fens there are no flood banks to obscure the view.
The village of Holywell is real picture postcard stuff. The pub is a lovely place to sit and watch the river.
A perfect afternoon at Hemingford. So many boaters end their season as soon as autumn arrives. Just look at what they're missing. We had the river to ourselves.
We spotted this narrowboat on the quay at St Ives. Can't quite work out how they get the van on and off the boat.
Another arty-farty shot.
